30 Junta rejects US deal. US President Reagen offers material aid to Britain.

0505 Arg. Tracker aircraft locate task force 350nm NE of Stanley.
0510 Arg. Navy ordered to rendezvous 250nm NE of Stanley.
0715 HMS Exeter, operating ahead of the main task force, encounters a submarine and attacks and sinks her using her Lynx helicopter. 9 crew dead, survivors rescued.
1920
Harrier CAP report vessel to south of task force. Minutes later HMS Coventry detects vessel to the north.
1930 Believing a pincer movement is in operation, Harriers from HMS Hermes are ordered to identify and attack southern target.
1950 Harriers attack southern target within TEZ using missiles.
2005 Although dark, 4 Skyhawk aircraft are launched to intercept the returning Harriers.
2015 Detecting the launch of enemy aircraft, 2 further Harriers are launched to assist the returning Harriers.

27 Final attempt by US to appeal to Argentina.

25 0950 British retake South Georgia. Royal Marines, supported by naval gunfire, retake Grytviken. Arg. casualties are 5 dead and 24 wounded as opposed to 3 wounded commandos.

24 Junta rejects UN brokered deal for peace.
22 British Foreign Secretary Pym flies to Washington to seek last minute deal for peace.
20 200 mile TEZ declared around South Georgia.
19 Argentine Junta reject Haig proposals. Haig returns to Washington.
18 200 mile Total Exclusion Zone (TEZ) declared around Falkland Islands. Any vessels / aircraft liable to attack.
17 Haig presents Junta with 5-point plan for peace.
15 Argentine recconaissance aircraft intercepted by RAF Phantoms from Ascension.
14 Haig returns to Washington.
13 Carrier group seen near Canary Islands.
12 Haig arrives back in Britain.
10 Haig arrives in Buenos Airies.
9 Canberra leaves UK with 3 Commando Brigade. EEC approves economic sanctions against Argentina.
7 US president Reagan approves Secretary of State Haig's peace mission.
5 Carrier group leaves UK.
3 UN passes resolution 502 calling for Argentine withdrawal.
1 Argentina invades Falklands and ejects British garrison.
South Georgia is similarly captured, with one patrol vessel and a submarine damaged.

March 1982

21 Most of the Argentine workers leaving a small party at Leith harbour. The Argentine flag is raised.
19 Argentina lands 'scrap workers' on South Georgia.

1764 French settlement on East Falkland.
1690 Falklands claimed by Capt.Strong for Britain, named after Lord Falkland.
1494 New World divided by treaty between Spain (west) and Portugal (east). Falklands (as then unoccupied) lay in Spanish half.
